Broadband speed jump

Just noticed a bit of a jump in my Sky broadband connection. Whereas recently I've been pushed to connect at anything over 1300kbps downstream, today I checked and my connection's sitting at a whisker under 1700kbps - image below

Haven't done anything to affect this at my end so I'm assuming BT/Sky have been having a bit of a fiddle. Either that or the sacrificial chickens did their job.

Whatever it is, it's a welcome boost.

UK's slowest broadband speed

Apparently a survey has been done and the village with the slowest broadband is Farningham in Kent with a massive 1.3mbps. See http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=3249105&#commentsform
Obviously, many other villages and towns have registered their slower figures.

Broadband Speed

Cheers John, that makes interesting reading.

Not sure what planet they're all on and from the looks of the comments that 1.3MBps us broadband users up here in Delph Wynd aren't the only one's suffering from chronically crippled copper wire syndrome.

Just had an email from a neighbour a few doors down and they're struggling to get 0.5Mb just now.

What really gets me is they'll be paying exactly the same as someone much nearer the exchange who gets nearer the 8Mb or so.

And, as much as the push is on for the new BT Infinity roll out (see JC's post about that here - http://delphwynd.net/web/node/94) the fact that we're not even on the cable network doesn't hold out well for us getting that anytime soon either.

Just have to keep chasing the kids off Facebook and Playstation online when I want to catch up with Strictly* on the BBC iPlayer.

Cheers for now,
Brian

*That was a joke!

Broadband slump

Has anyone noticed a severe deterioration in speeds? I appreciate that I am right at the end of the line, the furthest away from the exchange, but my download speed dropped to 59kbps on Wednesday, upload down to 115kbps. BT say there is no problem, but my ISP, Plusnet, have been keeping an eye on it and maintain that there is a serious problem. If your service is slowing down, complain to your ISP and maybe, just maybe, we will get the update to the exchange which has been promised since day one.

Broadband speed

Has anyone noticed that BT have said that they will supply 24Mbps broadband to 75% of the UK populace?
See http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=3202523. What's the betting we will be among the 25%?

I have just done a speed test 21.00 hrs.: 1.14Mbps download; 0.36 Mbps upload. Pathetic!

Re: Broadband Speeds

Hi John,

We also had a letter from Sky to say that they would be rolling out faster connections 'over the coming weeks'. Not sure how that's going to work on our stretched out and ancient wires coming from Bedford Place either.

I have noticed the speeds creeping up gradually over the past month or so though, still nothing to write home about and way below the 5Mbit recommendation I tried to watch some HD programme on the STV Player last night with.

Sitting just over 1500kbps download just now, 600kbps up, but I'm not holding my breath for a huge leap anytime soon either.
